The nickname "Seminoles" was elected in 1947 by the Florida State students. FSU's "Chief Osceola" relates back to a famous Indian leader named "Osceola", who battled in the Seminole Wars in the early 1800's. Now, "Chief Osceola's" authentic costume is designed by native Seminole Indians. At home games, "Chief Osceola" and "Renegade" gallop the football field. The Appaloosa rears up on his hind legs, and "Chief Osceola" plants the fiery spear into the turf. The Chief and Renegade trademark Florida State's "Seminoles".
