The "Wolverines" first emerged as the nickname for The University of Michigan's athletic teams in 1861. In 1898, Michigan's last minute victory over rival Chicago gave UM its first Western Conference football championship. This game was the inspiration for Louis Elbel to write what is regarded as "the finest college march ever."
