The University of North Carolina "Ramses the Ram" emerged from Jack Merritt, the star fullback of the 1922 football team, which posted a 9-1 record. Merritt was nicknamed, "the battering ram" for the way he ran the football. In 1924, cheerleader Vic Huggins linked a Ram mascot with Merritt's aggressive style of play. For over 60 years, the Ram has been the sideline star of the University of North Carolina's football team. What's a "Tar Heel"? The nickname emerged during the Revolutionary War when British troops discovered tar on their feet, after forging the Tar River. The "Tar Heels" nickname is also said to have described state residents during the 1700's.
