Starting in the 1920's, media referred to The University of Notre Dame athletic teams as the "Fightin' Irish" due to their "never say die" attitude and Irish traits of grit, determination and tenacity. Irish Terriers stood as the official mascot from 1924-66. In 1924 an Irish Terrier, Tipperary Terrance, was brought to Notre Dame by the legendary football coach Knute Rockne. Shannon View Rudy, known as "Mascot Mike," marked the last of the Irish Terriers. Since 1966, "The Leprechaun" has reigned as the official mascot of Notre Dame and the "Fightin' Irish."
