The University of Texas varsity teams have been known as "Longhorns" since 1904. The live "Longhorn" steer mascot made his first appearance in 1916 when the "Longhorns" beat the Aggies 21-7. Soon after, it was discovered that the "Longhorns" mascot had been branded "13-0" with 8 inch numbers. The brand reflected the Aggies 13-0 upset the previous year. UT fans changed the 13 to a "B", made the hyphen an "E", inserted a "V", and the "O" was already there. Since that day, the University of Texas Longhorn mascot is known as "BEVO".
